Is Heatran the most unnecessary Legendary Pokémon? Considering there seems to be so many in the Pokémon world, do you ever question its Legendary status? It almost feels as though, with its abundance, it really isn't Legendary after all. That brings me to another question, do you think Legendaries should only be one of a kind? Or do you like the idea of more than one Heatran, or Ho-oh, or Latios for example, existing?

I think perhaps it was overshadowed by the over abundance of legendaries introduced for that generation. It seems to meet the criteria to be classed as a legendary in term of stats and rarity, so I wouldn't say it was the most unnecessary legendary. I think legendaries should be kept as they are in which they can only be found once, but there should be less introduced in each generation. Having 3 or 4 legendaries in one generation is more than enough, the amount of legendaries introduced in Gen IV & V felt like way too many.

Lore and plot wise, yes, hella unnecessary.

But it's a beast in battles, just ask Sopheria and Archy, the Heatran lovers. For some reason that sounds like a ship name.

I think it still qualifies as a legendary in terms of its rarity, which by in-game terms, means that it can only be encountered and battled once. But I've always found it a little odd that it's the only legendary Pokémon with a 50/50 gender ratio.

I guess it counts as legendary as long as there's legends about it in some form or another?

No more so than the likes of Phione, Manaphy, Shaymin, Victini etc. I think as Gens have progressed "Legendary" has more and more come to mean "rare and unusual" as opposed to "exceedingly powerful and important to the natural order" like it used to. I mean, sure, we've had Legendaries that fit more the former category than the latter since before Gen IV, but Gen IV did have an exceedingly large number of Legendaries, so Heatran didn't feel particularly special.

    No, Phione is.

The problem for me was the abundance of Gen IV legendaries which affected my perception of Heatran. Unfortunately Heatran was placed alongside some very impressive and memorable legendaries (in my opinion) which makes it seem redundant in comparison.

Regarding your second question, I prefer to think of legendaries as being one of a kind.

Heatran was created at the same time as the creation trio, and represents the earth's core. I'd pretty much outright class it as a legendary, but I'm not so sure why it can be either male or female.

Regarding your second question, there are actually some legendary Pokémon with more than one of its kind. A village of Shaymin is found in PMDS, Entei can spawn out of volcanoes, and Lugia just had a child in the anime. Heatran should be able to breed, then.

I think it's an interesting point to make about the watering down of legendary status when you introduce too many of them. When you can't throw a rock without hitting a legendary pokemon it's hard to treat the idea of a legendary pokemon with the same awe and respect.

I've never really remembered it at all, but I think to me the once I hate the most are thundurus and the others. Dislike their design and just pointless to me. But what is Heatran meant to represent?

hahaha i have to agree with you. i remember when i first found out about heatran i couldn't help but ask, "WHY??" Seriously there's enough legendaries as it is and having that one added for such a silly reason kind of just made legendaries lose their luster even more.

but i have to say heatran isn't the only legendary i deem as pointless.
