In-game Trades

Occasionally stumbles across an NPC trainer asking to trade Pokemon. Includes some strong or unique Pokemon sometimes, such as Mr. Mime and Jynx in Generation 1 and Hawlucha in Ultra Sun/Moon. Have you ever used a Pokemon from the in-game trades?

Edit: And an extra question: What would it take for you to consider using an in-game trade Pokemon, if you do not normally?

Believes not. Potentially used Quacklin' (Farfetch'd) for out-of-battle things like Fly and Cut. Forgets these trades exist most of the time.

To make an in-game trade Pokemon useable:
  1. Make disobedience much harder to trigger. Happens in the early game sometimes.
  2. Allow you to nickname them, or at least choose from a few options. Cannot recall ever liking one of their names.

It's only something I'd really do if there's no other way to get the Pokemon in question. Even then, if possible, I'll just use it to breed for one without the nickname and disobedience risk.

The only time I can think of that I actually used an in-game trade Pokemon was in XD, where I used the Dragon Dance Larvitar I traded from Duking. The three Duking trades don't have nicknames, and disobedience isn't a thing in the Orre games since they don't have badges.

Apart from Larvitar, I'd also strongly consider using Duking's Meditite, and I'll likely also be stuck with the Cerulean City Jynx if I ever do an Ice or Psychic monotype of a Kanto game.

I mostly get the trades for pokedex completion but sometimes I do use traded pokemon, like jynx in gen 1. There are certainly some great trades like the gen 2's Goldenrod female Machop, gen 3's slakoth for makuhita, or gen 6's 2nd starter, but overall I find the trades to be mediocre. Also, there are some really bad trades. The lickitung trade on route 18 is one of the worst trades in the games if you're playing gen 1 or Leaf Green because Slowbro is so much better. Gen 2's Violet City Onix is a net positive at first glance because in Gold and Silver the evolutionary stones are post game and you're limited to 1 each, but the problem is that Onix is terrible and its evolution is a trade one. Lastly, there's the infamous haunter trade in gen 4.

The Onix trade in Johto is actually clever to help those whose starter is Chikorita, since they complement each other very well. Onix can take care of all the early game Bug and Flying types that Chikorita is bad against (including the first two gyms which are also of those types), and is pretty much invincible against the many early game Pokémon that are stuck with Normal and other weak physical moves.

But I personally don't like using traded Pokémon, because of the nickname restriction and because they level up too fast. If that Pokémon is available in the game I'd rather catch one myself later.

I honestly don't think I ever have. There's never been an in-game trade Pokemon that I've felt compelled to use, the nickname thing is a big limiting factor too. But mostly because I want to beat the game with my own Pokemon, not one obtained from some in-game rando.

I used Jynx in Kanto.

I think these trades would be more beneficial as an alternative to those who can't get trade evolutions normally. (haunter with everstone was not nice).

I haven't really utilized the in-game trade system, mostly because the nicknames were atrocious.
In-game trade evolutions could be an interesting way to provide value, though I feel like trade evolutions in general need to go.

lol it's not technically a trade but I stole Kenya the Spearow in GSC multiple times and used it, the boosted exp made it super easy and Drill Peck was always pretty good to use. Eventually I started feeling guilty doing that and began delivering it like asked in other playthroughs.

For actual trades, not much honestly. I did have some use for MUSCLE the Machop in GSC since it helped me beat Whitney when I couldn't do it using my current team, but usually the nicknames put me off so I boxed them. :')

I don't recall ever using one for a playthrough. I tend to ignore the ingame trades altogether unless it's the only way to get the Pokemon registered in the dex.

For me to use one disobedience would need to be changed. Why risk the disobedience when I can just breed the Pokemon and get one that will listen to me? =P
