[PokeCommunity.com] Impact of the Fairy Type

With X and Y, Nintendo introduced a new type for the first time since Johto, the Fairy type. Due to the release of Sylveon's design, speculation had been through the roof about its type, because it didn't obviously fit into any of the existing type categories. In the game, various other Pokemon that aren't native to Kalos became dual Fairy-type, changing their value and uses heavily. Since this was such a revolutionary change to the franchise, I'm curious - how do you think this will impact future games? Will they continue to add the Fairy-type to current Pokemon like they did with Marill, Clefairy, and others? Did the addition of fairies improve the Pokemon series?

I want my Flying-type Sylveon. Now.

The Fairy type is no doubt a strong new type, defeating behemoths such as Dragon types, while also giving types that are underrated offensively, Poison and Steel, some new strengths. Like seriously, when was the last time you used Steel Wing of all moves? I think that not much will change, considering we probably won't get a new type any time soon. Although, I think that with the new Fairy type, we might need a Legendary Pokemon that's strong enough to take any Fairy. While that sounds crazy, I think we might get a Poison type Legendary soon, but that's just me.

I don't think they'll be retconning that many more Pokemon, if any, into the Fairy type, as in my opinion they already did that to a lot of Pokemon. Though this won't be like the Steel type's introduction, which saw a measly 1 line become part Steel, but the Fairy type doesn't need any more retypings.

I can't see them giving any other Pokemon other than next generation ones the Fairy type. They never did it with Steel or Dark after Gen. II (or with any other type, for that matter), and even though there are still plenty of Pokemon that seem like they could be part Fairy, the only way I can see them gaining that type is if they acquire a Mega Evo. that has that type.

The addition of the Fairy type has definitely improved the games. As Nonon pointed out, they overpower the previously overpowered Dragon types and provided two of the lesser offensive types another type to be super effective against. It's also super effective against and resists Dark and Fighting types, both of which are common in terms of Pokemon and attacks. I can definitely see a Poison type legendary and perhaps some more Poison Pokemon coming out in future gens. (Though, given how Poison is the 8th most common type, I can't see them adding too many more Poison types. Poison type attacks, on the other hand, I can see.)

Honestly? I don't think the Fairy type has made much of an impact on the game. Sure, immunity to Dragon moves has curb-stomped Outrage users into submission...but other than that? Not many Fairy types actually have good Defense, making them easy to slaughter with coverage moves like Poison Jab and Iron Head, of which a few Dragons have easy access to.

Rather than retconning previous Pokemon to Fairy types, I feel they should have focused a lot more on newer Fairy types. Sylveon, Xerneas and Klefki are the only new Fairy types that actually seem to be useful, one of which can be destroyed by Physical attacks, the other is only really useful for its Support moveset, and of course Xerneas that's not really impressive on either defensive side.

I hope to see better Fairy types introduced in the next Generation along with some more moves so that they can actually seem like a proper Type and not a type for the sake of innovation and balance.

I'm fairly doubtful they'll retrospectively add any more Fairy types in future Pokémon games. They did a really good job with its introduction in Gen VI, much better than Dark and Steel when they were first introduced.

However, lately in particular I'm really annoyed by the Fairy type. Particularly Mawile and Azumarill. Too many people are using them online and they're just... ugh. Regardless, the Fairy type absolutely evened-out the game. Just last night I'd been thinking back to GSC and how big a deal was made out of Blackthorn City and the Dragon Type in general - while it's a shame that technically Game Freak won't get away with glorifying a particular type (because the Dragon's Den, Lance/Claire are just awesome in general), it's simply because the types are pretty much completely balanced now, which makes the game much more challenging, and altogether more fun.

A lot of my main points have been said already so I add by saying that I want to see more fairy type moves - more powerful ones at 120 base power (typical recoil damage) and perhaps more fairy specific support moves.

Yess to a poison legendary. Hasn't been done yet and it can add something new to the legendary lineup.

Light of Ruin is a special 120 BP Fairy move with recoil. Given, it's only available to AZ's Floette. I do agree that more powerful Fairy moves would be nice, even if it's one with a high BP but lower accuracy, like Focus Miss and Stone Miss.

I didn't like fairy until one day I decided I needed one on my team and saw that there wasn't on I really disliked. I still think that being resistant to three of the most used offensive types is a little unfair, considering its sub par weaknesses, and I didn't believe dragon needed a nerf in the first place, but I do tend to like fairies, so I can't complain too much.

I don't know I haven't really noticed the Fairy types that much, I'm aware they're there haha but I don't really tend to use them - I'm fine using Ice still to take down dragons lol :) When the Dark type was initially introduced that had a much bigger impact, for me anyways :)

The Fairy-type definitely balanced out things like I expected, even if I did get most of the type's offensive/defensive matchups predicted right even before the updated type chart's reveal. I do see the gripe with most being more specially defensive but all and all, the type did really well for me in-game given I saw so many opponents using Dark, Fighting and Dragon-types. Before Fairy, it was kinda hard to use Dragon and Ice effectively because Dragons were weak to themselves while Ice is fragile and the Pokemon itself have lots of weaknesses so as a result Ice-type moves were used more as a coverage move by non-Ice Pokemon.

I always felt like Fighting-types were just as strong as Dragon so that was nice to see Fairy resist that and also retconning various older generation Pokemon helped the type catch up in terms of Pokemon numbers because well, if none of the old Pokemon did get the retcon the type would be so small it's a joke, but it still ended up as the smallest type, tied with Ghost. Now I really can't wait to see more Fairy-types in 7th Gen and what new type combinations we'll see there.

I'm one of those who believes Dragon-types did need the nerf, considering they kinda reigned supreme over the metagame for the longest time, with people having to create specific movesets or use a specific Pokemon just to bring down Dragons. It was honestly annoying and I am elated there's a type now that legitimately counters them.

    (Defensive Fairy next? y/y?)

But I think aside from all of that technical stuff, Fairies have been well-received by yours truly since their announcement. I believed that rumor going around a while back about Fairy-type being a possibility when everyone was busy trying to figure out Sylveon's type, and was ecstatic when it turned out to be true. Fairy just seemed to be the only type that made sense for the way Sylveon looked, and with how cryptic Nintendo was being about Sylveon I just knew it had to be a new type hands down.

Little did I know how happy I was about to be!

I noticed I'm not the only one in love with Fairies either. I didn't see too many people flailing their hands and falling on the floor in disapproval when Fairy-types were announced. They've become extremely popular, to say the least! It's a very well-received type in general that added a touch of elegance and 'kawaii' to our games. I think the impact of Fairy-types is a very positive one indeed!

Fairy types still need another generation to fully settle into the games, I reckon. One evidence is that there's only one Fairy type TM and that's handed out by the Gym Leader. Also as of now there are only 7 known fairy type attacks with Moonblast being the strongest; is that enough? Maybe, but another generation introducing more influx of new Fairy-type Pokemon and attacks wouldn't hurt.

I'd previously thought Dragon types were meant to be mystical and OP but we all know now that that's not the case.

No more Pokémon will be retconned. It doesn't make sense. If they wanted, they could've retconned more Pokémon already. They did add 10 points to the BST of several Pokémon, but a type change is much more drastic.

As for me, I ignore most Fairy-types because almost all of them, heck I think all of them except for Xerneas, are pink (metaphorically speaking... I know Gardevoir isn't pink), fluffy, girly things. Definitely not my style of Pokémon. They're supposed to counter Dragons, but most of them are weak and will be defeated by Dragon-types because they suck.

Overall, not an addition I welcomed, even though I was one of the few people who rightly guessed Sylveon was going to be a new type. If they were going to make changes to the type chart anyway, what was wrong with buffing Ice so it counters Dragon more reliably?

They need to add "cool" Fairy types - Like an Ogre, or a Dragon.

Dark Type Attacks are very common now because Steel doesn't resist it anymore. Metagross is all but useless now because of that.

    I want to see. [Fairy/Dark] [Fairy/Poison] [Fairy/Fight]

I think everyone would like [Fairy/Dragon]

It's great that their weaknesses are Poison/Steel, so maybe we will get some good basic Steel- and Poison-type physical moves? ;)

But in all honesty, even though I'm quite sad my poor Dragons got nerfed, I think giving Dragons another weakness was necessary. I don't know how necessary it was to give Fairies an immunity to Dragon, though.

I realllyyy hope that in the future we won't only see cutesy fairies, especially because in many stories fairies are pretty dang evil.

Fairy/Dark could be an imp pokemon... how cool is THAT?
