I have a friend who has Hyper beam is his favourite atk because it does a lot of damage and each time i say Hyper beam is bad it offends him.Is Hyper beam really good or not?

Depends on the Pokemon. Personal experience tells me it only works on Pokemon that have both the offensive and defensive stats to make full use of it. That is, a good Attack stat (up until DP) or a good S Attack stat in combination with the defenses and HP that allow it to survive the recharge turn. The latter is especially important if you want to continue using the Pokemon after the first shot, considering the fact that you can't even switch out while it's recharging (at least, in RSE and beyond). So, you're stuck there with a sitting duck.

Alternatively, it's good for kamikaze shots, where you have a fast, hard-hitting Pokemon that you want to kill off, a little like using Explosion on other movesets. The goal there, then, is to kill off the opponent's best Pokemon (or at least one of their best) and then let your own Pokemon take the hit and be killed in the next turn (or, alternatively, have its defenses taken out, if you think Subbing first is a good idea).

Otherwise, it's not worth it, especially on just any Pokemon, because the recharge turn is too dangerous to be worth it.

Hyper Beam is completely HORRIBLE. It's never a move worth using if it isn't STAB (even with STABBED, there are much better moves)

Why you ask? It leaves you recharging one turn while your opponent if able to knock you out. You can't even switch when recharging. A STABBED Earthquake from Garchomp = 150 Power while Hyper Beam is 150, and Hyper Beam being Normal type doesn't have any type coverages.

That all explains why Hyper Beam is one of the worst moves to use

Listen to Jax Malcom too XD

Maybe if its power was 200 or something...

    Still would kinda blow...

Hyper beam is teh pwnage! Not so much...it's how you can tell if somebody is a n00b. When they flame me for saying hyper beam sucks.

Porygon-Z is the sole Pokemon that utilizes Hyper Beam in a useful way.
A STAB-ed Hyper Beam with Adaptability is NOT pretty - and even less so with one or three Nasty Plots.

Even then, it is still a very weak attack that compromises your Pokemon during their next turn. If you get KO'ed in the process, it may as well be a weaker version of Selfdestruct.

Gymnotide, I have to say you're wrong on Porygon Z. If you actually do Competetive, you would know that Hyperbeam leaves a Pokemon stranded on the battle field for an extra turn, leaving you unable to switch out. That single turn lets the opponent switch out to another pokemon, and before you know it, you'll have a Spikes, SRing, Whirlwinding Skarmory in play ready.

No form of Hyperbeam is useful, not even on Slaking.

Do the math. Hyperbeam takes two turns to hit once. Which means, in 2 turns, it only inflicts 150 Power. 150 divided by two is 75. That means Hyperbeam inflicts 75 Power each turn. Many moves do better than Hyperbeam - like Return, Double Edge... etc

And let's not forget that the likes of tyranitar, garchomp, porygon Z,dragonite,..can come in,set up and sweep...

Thank you now i really know if it is weak or not.

hyper beam i a strong attach(power=150) but has many negative affects besides it.

    1. immobile after next turn
    2. low pp
    3. low accuracy

only if you have a pokemon like dragonite you should try it on.

It sucks on dragonite too :/ It sucks on everything, except MAYBE slaking, and that's only in ADV.

Nope, it sucks on every pokemon known to man.

I would explain why, but I'm too lazy. Soo...

    Spoiler:

HYPER BEAM SUCKS SOOOO bad. Your friend reminds me of some idiots I know who think they're smart.

Penguin, you've obviously never seen the evil of slaking in ADV, have you? Slaking is OU, I doubt it sucks, and hyper beam is decent. really, who uses hyper beam on it when you are still vulnerable to heracross and co? Maybe take them out first...sure return is better, but hyper beam doesn't suck on slaking, but rather is far inferior.

and yes, hyper otherwise sucks. we've already established that :D
