How would one Hack a Hack with Disassemblies?

This is my first time trying to do any kind of ROM hack and I just found the site and Deokishisu's - "Stop Binary Hacking; It's Holding Back the Entire Community" post so I'm trying to do just that. I'd like to setup a better "translation" of the Japanese versions of the games. I spent hours trying to hunt down a pure translation with no luck as literally everything labelled as a Gen 1 translation either cheats and is just a change to catch rates etc. of U,E Blue or seems to only translate some dialogue.

I finally found Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue Versions - 100% English (Standard Edition) - By: ShaneM from 2017 and Pokémon Green in English - By: Montblanc from 2022. The second is just Green but maintained after 2017 by user Montblanc as he apparently added a laundry list of changes (which I can only find on Archive.org)

These are great but I was still disappointed by a few thing as they are still based on USA Blue. The original version by ShaneM lists changing all the text and pokedex entries to match, but they seem to have skipped all the pokemon and character names. So I want to go through each Pokemon and Character and replace their names with the closest Hepburn and Romaji versions that will fit. This way I can enjoy the Drunken man with original names while I play what is supposed to be the Japanese versions. I feel like this would make it feel far more like a "translation" vs a localization.

I started with binary hacking using TileMolester to replace the Pokemon Logo on the title screen with the Japanese original with the words Pocket Monsters except when played on Super Gameboy the colours are wrong. On a Super Gameboy the Title should be Green, the words "Pocket Monsters" should be Red and words "Green Version" should be Blue strangely enough. Mine shows as Black, Blue and Green. Not the end of the world but it bugs my OCD. Also they edited the Pokemon Blue SGB boarder to say "Pokemon" where it should say nothing or "Pocket Monsters" so I both want to change SGB colours and Boarders if possible.

I was going to binary hack them but I think the SGB stuff requires or will be easier with disassemblies. I'm also realizing after thinking about it that changing the names may require the use of disassemblies even more since the number of characters changing would cause me to either fight to fit names.

Part of me wishes I could just make all my changes to pokered, then make an ips patch, apply it to the base Pokemon Blue and then apply their ips patches but I'm pretty sure that won't work since mine would be a different size and ie have different offsets. I thought about decomping ShaneM's and Montblanc's hacks but the asm banks seem to have no human readable text so I can't search for and change the names in the disassembly mgbdis makes. Any suggestions or hints would be fantastic. I tried to see if I could find githubs for both these Hacks as I would have thought they had done these using pokered but I've had no luck and it seems like a lot of work to skip out on when the only other thing I want to change are names.

You wouldn't, unless the hack was also made with the disassembly and you had the source code.

As you've seen, disassembling the hacks yourself isn't really a viable option, so your options are basically:
    1. make the whole hack from scratch with pokered, recreating the features of those hacks
    2. binary hack the hack

Which option is better depends on how many changes the original hacks have, how many changes you want to make and personal preference.

If you do go with the disassembly route, maybe you could use pokejp as the base?

You are a life saver!! I spent all night searching through the forks of pokered looking for something like this and I only found pokered-jp which is actually in japanese and a pokered-bugfix that I was going to kind of smash together but with pokejp as a base I can go back to my original plan and just fix the names and title screen!!! Thank you sooo much!
