I'm just really bored getting my Pokedex up right now so I thought I'd ask a question.

Where there ever any moves that a Pokemon learned that just made you go "wtfbbq?" For me it's king Onix and Dragonbreath. I don't get how that works, at all...

Well Onix is like a rock serpent (or something like that) and since serpents are reptiles, something that dragons are, it must be able to learn dragon breath. Well thats my take on the story

    Probably it looks like this:

Probably, but isn't Dragon Breath blue? xD

Surf, Rhydon, end of story. xD Also, any of the small water Pokemon using surf. Seriously, how on earth is an Maril going to carr the player? :S Same goes for fly and the small birds, like Pidgey for example. :S

Onix is what happened when a dragon bumped uglies with a rock.
    Enough said.

I think Onix is based on some kind of legend about a dragon that ate rocks or something. I'll check Bulbapedia.

    ...

    A wyrm, apparently.

I know Metronome can make a Pokemon use nearly any move but still doesn't mean a Togepi should be able to fly.

And guess what a wyrm is? A dragon without wings or legs. :P

As for weird Pokemon-move combinations, Gloom with Sweet Scent. o.o Or Butterfree with Harden.

I can't remember, its been a long time since I watched that episode. But Sweet Scent was released in Generation II anyway, wasn't it?

In my opinion, the move Fly just doesn't make any sense. (Nor do Defog and Flash, for that matter.) In the case of the move Fly, except for Pokemon such as Salamence and Dragonite (which was a huge disappointment to me, Dragonair was just gorgeous and graceful and then she evolves into a flying lump.), it's physically impossible for the pokemon to carry much weight at all beyond their own body weight, much less a ten+ year-old human. Defog doesn't make sense to me because fog is, essentially, a cloud, and there is no winged pokemon large enough to blow away a cloud. Period. Finally, Flash doesn't make sense because last I checked, pokemon don't just GLOW. Granted, Charmander's tail is aflame. And most Fire-type Poke'mon can produce fire. But shining a light doesn't cause a region of more than a square mile to just light up!

For Fly and Defog, it's just the usual 'Pokemon have supernatural strength'. As for Flash, yes it is weird, not that they can do it ( it isn't so much that the Pokemon 'flashes' as it flashes a light, after all the in-game description is 'The user flashes a light that cuts the foe's accuracy. It can be used to illuminate caves.'), but the weird thing is the fact that it lights the cave like that. Although I doubt the screen is suppose to represent a square mile.

Why do birds learn Metal Claw? That's my question. (yes, I have seen it.)

    Our world =/= Pokemon world

Physics and the natural properties of materials are probably really, really different from our world.

    Also, Doduo flying.

Thats what I always thought too! Anyways when its comes to pokemon and their moves I just don't put much thought into it. Its just a game, everything doesn't have to make sense.

Well for that matter why does any Pokemon learn anything besides leer, growl, tail whip, tackle, pound, scratch, bite, crunch, double slap, double kick, leek slap (Farfetch'd in original TCG) and the various other usual physical moves?

Pokemon have powers simply because powers are a cool, otherwise it would be about people capturing and making plain animals fight which is, as well as much less interesting, more likely to end up being an adult-oriented idea because blood would then need to be added to keep some form of interesting visual intact (think of the fight between Woundwort and Bigwig in Watership Down, god knows how the film managed a PG rating).
It makes me think, though: why has there been no 'metal bite' move?
