How come Ash never had a rival during most of Hoenn?

During Pokemon Advanced, Advanced Challenge, and most of Advanced Battle, Ash didn't have a rival like May did. Although they never really did much with the Ash/Gary rivalry during Kanto and Johto, I still enjoyed it because it brought some conflict to the show (other than Ash and Co. vs. Team Rocket all the time). I would've liked to have seen something similar in Hoenn, where Ash found himself with a new rival that would pop up a couple times a season and get under Ash's skin. Of course, a couple of times they could team up like Ash & Gary did, because as we all know nobody *truly* hates anyone in the Pokemon universe, but for the most part, they would be good old fashioned rivals that would compete to be better trainers than one another. I think that it would've added a certain dynamic spark to the show and would make for a more intense Hoenn League competition at the end. I know that the Ash vs. Gary battle/interaction was the highlight for me during the Silver Conference because there was a connection between the two that had been building over the years. It made the battle even more intense and suspenseful, because it was one that so many fans had wanted to see and we all knew that neither Ash nor Gary was going to give in to one another.

Well anyway, I would've liked to have seen Ash have a rival in Hoenn... anyone else feel the same way?

Him and Gary are no longer rivals anymore though. They ended their rivalry and became friends at the end of the Silver Conference. Also, don't forget Gary decided to become a researcher, so him and Ash aren't competing anymore to become pokemon masters.

As for the two of them running into each other in Hoenn, that would've been great! I would've like to have seen a reunion between them, but since Gary's voice actor quit the show in Japan, they don't use his character anymore. :(

I bet they would still try and outdo each other in *something* if they did run into each other again. It's in their nature to be competitive with each other. But what Ash needs is someone who has the same goal in mind, someone who will race him throughout the region and compete with him in a league. Gary no longer is that person.

    Oh.....oops...I forgot about that silver conference thing...Oh well...maybe Ash'll get a new rival...Maybe this time, a girl o.o

Not Misty though...Misty is more of Ash's friend than a rival...Though if they made her his rival, that would be interesting o.O

Well, in the Special Episodes, Gary does return and with the return to Kanto in the series eventually, hope springs eternal and he might return, but yeah, I do see your point but I think that's why they made the May subplot as to make up for their failure for Ash/Gary and give that as a change of pace since the original premise didn't work or better yet couldn't work.

So no, it doesn't bother me. Besides, the badges and the organizations give Ash enough to focus on anyway at this point. It isn't much but still.

Did you see the episode when Ash and his gang was in a forest in the Johto Region and Ash and the gang could see things in the dark that weren't real. Then Gary walks in the forest with his Hoothoot and used the move where Hoothoot's eyes glow red and makes those things dissapper. Then later on Ash and Gary go against team Rocket and Gary has a Umbreon and Ash and Gary fight together to defeat team rocket. Then at the end Ash and Gary go their own ways. That was a great episode. Does anyone think the same?
