Okay so I just recently played through moon again and while I like Gladion his character is so unbelievable. I want to assume he's a little older than your character, but regardless that's still pretty young to be so damn hardcore.

Some thoughts that came to mind... Are those real cartilage piercings?? The grabbing of the other arm before battling. I don't get it is he trying to restrain how hardcore he is? That weird pose where he takes his arm and awkwardly crosses it over the front of his body??? I think that's the one that really gets me. I literally did the pose myself just to see how ridiculous it would be to stand like that and just as I suspected I felt like a complete loser

    Get out.

Yeah, he's a really interesting character. I do like how he develops through the game to end up being somewhat of a nicer person towards you. He's p cool.

    kids are strange these days

though it's probably pretty normal by the Pokemon world's standards given that no one ever bats an eye when some parent sends their kid to defeat the local mafia group all by themselves

Spoiler: on gladion restraining his hand

    [PokeCommunity.com] Gladion: Um what

I always chalked it up to him being a hardcore edgelord, really.

Also what Zekrom said above is pretty true, too.

Besides, if we're talking about strange battle poses, does anyone remember Zinnia's odd pose in ORAS?

    [PokeCommunity.com] Gladion: Um what

    "Zinnia uses Swagger!"

Her pose is an intimidating swagger, it's to give her an expression of wild eagerness for combat. Zinnia's pose is by far one of my most favorite NPC poses and one of the many reasons she's such an awesome character.

I actually really like Gladion, as a character, and although the arm thing he does is a little weird, it really does characterize him pretty well. Gladion is an over the top character who has a sort of "try hard edge" and the dialogue he has reflects that pretty well, it just seems all the more appropriate for him to have that edgy pose that seems sort of weird and a bit silly.

I guess you have not watched chuunibyou demo koi ga? The battle stance he does is reference to Yuuta Togashi's pose as he does same thing in his chuunibyou state

So, what you're saying is he's just being edgy on purpose. Do you think he shops at Hot Topic? He probably shops at Hot Topic.

He seems like he's a lot younger. Reminds me of this Japanese thing (chuunibyou), idk how to describe it so here's Urban Dictionary:

A Japanese slang term which roughly translates to "Middle School 2nd Year Syndrome". People with chuunibyou either act like a know-it-all adult and look down on real ones, or believe they have special powers unlike others.

So yeah, they act like they're way cooler than you, have mystical powers, or are just really edgy because of those reasons. That's how I saw it, but I watch too much anime.. so..

There's official pre-production art of him floating around that has a note jotted down that literally says he's meant to be a chuunibyou.

It's interesting because chuunibyou are exactly as they sound, they act like edgy middle-schoolers. When used for a character trope, they're not meant to be taken seriously. But I feel like the story wanted you to take Gladion seriously to some extent so it's rather conflicting.

i will not tolerate hate on my son

But no, I can see how his edginess is a little silly. But, and I headcanon he's around 13, it's still believable that someone around that age would run away from their abusive parent and rebel against everything said parent stood for. And also consider Team Skull is literally just composed of runaways, it goes. I haven't replayed SM since my initial playthrough though, so I could be missing bits and pieces. I love my edgy son tho. x

Ahh I see, I don't watch much anime so I didn't know this was a thing. But now it makes a lot more sense!
