I really like Gengar a lot since I usually picked Abra before I played Soul Silver, and I wanted to try something new. Now I'm re-playing Silver Version and I got a Gastly. The only Problem is that he's a Special Attacker and I'm afraid to teach him Shadow Ball since Ghost attacks are physical prior to Gen 4. What do you guys think?

Another problem is that he doesn't have the ability levitate so ground types can hit him with 2x damage.. :\

    1. Do you have the ability to trade?
    2. You don't have to give him a ghost move.
    3. You can always get a dark type (which would cover psychic & ghost too) in addition.
    4. Gengar is pretty fast and has a high Sp. Att so that ground weakness won't be too much of a problem if you can knock it out before it attacks. Besides, Gengar is not exactly a type of pokemon that can take hits of any kind anyway.

Thank you for the advice :) Yes I can trade. I have Gold, Silver, and Crystal with a link cable and two gameboy colors. Could you give me an idea for movesets with Gengar? thanks

    Shadow Ball
    Psychic
    Dream Eater
    Hypnosis

You can switch shadow ball for sludge bomb if you would like.

Hes Right gengar has real trouble standing up to hits.

It says on Bulbapedia Gengar is unable to learn Sludge Bomb(TM36) in generation 2. :'( That's disappointing because it has good attack and can poison, although it's a physical attack.

Even though Shadow ball was a physical attack in GenII, it was standard for Gengar to carry it because of a) STAB and b) chance for reducing sp.def. :P

Standard Gengar sets at the time looked something like this:
    - Shadow Ball
    - Psychic
    - Ice Punch/Fire Punch
    - Thunderbolt

It's true that Gengar doesn't get Shadow Ball in this Generation, but it's also true that in Generation 4 Gengar loses the ability to use the elemental punches. Thunder, Fire and Ice Punch are all easy to obtain early in the game and provide Gengar with powerful coverage (Hitting every Pokémon for at least normal damage - in future Generations Lanturn's ability prevents Electric from hitting it but in Gen 2 Electric attacks hit it for normal). Psychic and Giga Drain aren't available for a while so the last slot would probably be best filled with Hypnosis :) . Note that if you're on Crystal, you can replace Thunderpunch with Thunderbolt (a Move Tutor outside the Game Corner on a certain day - wednesday I think - teaches it for something like 3000 coins). Dream Eater and Nightmare are quite good too if you're looking for something to combine with Hypnosis :) .

-is late- Gonna go ahead and lock this since he's got an answer. No need in spamming it up anymore.
