Evolution misconceptions

I'm sure we all remember when people thought Luvdisc was going to evolve into Alomamola but it turned out they were completely unrelated Pokemon.

So, I ask you guys this. What are Pokemon that definitely looked like they were an evolved, pre-evolved Pokemon of an already existing Pokemon only to turn out they weren't related in any way and can't even evolve into them?

Were were some of my evolution misconceptions before the games came out:

  1. Tauros into Buffoulant.
  2. Helioptile being a Mawile pre-evolution.
  3. Luvdisc into Alomamola (I mean who didn't think this back then?)

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but these were definitely three I thought were going to be the case. Helioptile especially gave me this vibe that it was the baby form of Mawile because its colors are so similar to Mawile (yellow and black).

Before I started playing or learned all of their names and types, I was under the impression that Farfetch'd evolved into Doduo and Gyarados into Lapras, both being based on similar types of creatures (birds and sea monsters, respectively) and listed next to each other in the Pokédex. Same with the Hitmons and, silliest of all, Pinsir/Tauros.

Spoiler:

I also tried evolving a Dunsparce in Silver Version into Gligar (it looks like the larva of something, right?) and, upon reveal, expected Shellos to be a pre-evolution of Lapras, Munna a pre-evolution of Drowzee, Gothitelle an evolution of Jynx, Emolga an evolution of Pachirisu, and Alomomola an evolution of Luvdisc.

Spoiler:

And while I can't remember these for a fact, I seem to recall thinking there was some kind of connection between Misdreavus and Unown, if only because the Beckett illustration of Unown had little orbs that reminded me of Misdreavus' necklace. (Looking back, it would've made more sense for me to connect Unown to Wobbuffet or Wobbuffet to Girafarig.) I'm also thinking that Absol first struck me as an Eeveelution. (With the "blade" on its head, maybe Steel?) Why it was appearing in the wild idk, but it definitely has that same sort of vague mammal look. Probably lost its stick the second I saw its name.

Sigilyph: Unown — For me personally, this is the main one that got to me. When I first saw Sigilyph, I could have sworn it was the evolved form of Unown. Not only do they look similar in certain ways regarding their eyes and appendages, but both can be found in ancient ruins, both are part Psychic-types based on symbols, and Sigilyph's Japanese name is literally "Symboler." I was flabbergasted when I found out that they weren't even related at all. Are you kidding me? They really dropped the ball here by not making Unown more interesting than just being Pokémon alphabet soup.

Drampa: Dunsparce — The only thing that they did for Dunsparce this generation was just give it an extra segment, which, in my opinion, along with the existence of regional forms and Paradox Pokémon, only proves that the development team is getting lazy. However, when I first saw Drampa, I could have sworn it was an evolution of Dunsparce. Dunsparce always looked like it could have potentially been a dragon, and even though they look different, they do have some similarities. Drampa is part Normal-type and does have some features that look like it could have "maturated" from Dunsparce. I mean, Dunsparce to Drampa makes more sense than Remoraid to Octillery, right?

Koraidon/Miraidon: Cyclizar — Before the game was released, a lot of us assumed that Cyclizar would be the pre-evolution to the box legendary, similar to how Cosmog was the base form of Solgaleo and Lunala. It turned out that the box legendaries were related to it as a Paradox version of Cyclizar and not a pre-evolution.

Diancie: Carbink — I was introduced to Pokémon X and Y a little later than normal. In fact, Pokémon Violet is the only Pokémon game that I purchased on release until this day (and even that was a little off because it took a few days for my game to arrive in the mail). Because of that, my first experience with Diancie was via battle footage. As a result, I had no idea it was a Mythical Pokémon and assumed it was an evolution of Carbink. It turned out that, much like Cyclizar and the Scarlet and Violet legendaries, they are related, but not through evolution. Apparently, a Diancie is a mutated Carbink, which only happens extremely rarely.

Alomomola: Luvdisc — Yes, I pretty much assumed the exact same thing as you (and everybody else).

If anything, I would say that the Marill line is one of the most normal. All it does is gets bigger, gets a different belly pattern, and grows longer ears, much similar to the Jigglypuff to Wigglytuff. As for my opinion on weird evolutions:

Magikarp to Gyarados – I get that it is based on the legend of carp becoming dragons, but those unfamiliar with the legend would find this evolution crazy.
Venonat to Venomoth – Moths should have the same evolution process as other butterfly, bee/wasp, or similar Pokémon with larvae. Gnats do not turn into moths.
Graveler to Golem – I always personally found Graveler evolving into Golem to be weird. I can see Geodude evolving into Graveler, but Golem doesn't look like it belongs to the line at all.
Exeggcute to Exeggutor – Six eggs to a big palm tree does not make sense at all.
Gloom to Bellossom – Bellossom does not look like it belongs to the Oddish family. I find it strange how it just loses its toxicity, bad smell, and just has a completely different look and feel to Gloom. Vileplume was clearly the right direction.
Remoraid to Octillery – Of course this one is one of, if not the craziest one of all.
Tyrogue to the Hitmons – The only Hitmon that looks like it evolves from Tyrogue is Hitmontop and that's being generous.
Zigzagoon to Lioone – This is kind of weird. It evolves from a raccoon to what resembles a honey badger.
Wingull to Pelipper – A seagull to a pelican with a huge beak doesn't make much sense, but it works I guess because they are birds that can usually by found in the same areas at sea.
Trapinch line – I don't even think I can explain this one. I have no idea what they were going for here.
Clamperl line – This one might actually be crazier than Remoraid and Octillery because we know that line was at least going for a gun theme. This line just makes no sense.
Rellor to Rabsca – This makes no sense to me. A dung beetle changes to something that is carrying around a fetus or something? Weird.
Shroodle to Grafaiai – A treeshrew turning into an aye aye. I get that both are native to Madagascar, but that's unusual still. By the way, African animals in Spain? Possible hint to a future region?

I used to think Beartic evolved into Cryogonal when Generation V wasn't localized yet.

Don't ask.

I'm not going to ask but this is absolutely hilarious.
