It also has Thunderbolt, Thunderwave, and Explosion.

not sure how effective explosion would be.. its attack stat is pretty weak even if you have max ev's and adamant nature.

on to your question though, hidden power is better IF you have the right hidden power(say hidden power grass/ice, even water is decent). unless you're extremely lucky, and unless it's netbattle, I doubt you would have the right hidden power however.

electrode could make a decent special wall. his base special defense may be plain old 80, but with his speed, and Mirror Coat and max sp. def EVs, it can take out huge threats like Genger and Alakazam.

and with a base attack of 50, explosion is still very good, especially against sweepers with low defense. it's a perfect way to use electrode to the best of its ability... mirror coat sweepers until his life is down, and finish what's left with explosion. thunderbolt for quick finishes and thunder wave/light screen for punishment/support.
