I have seen this slightly discussed in some other threads and it really has intrigued me for quite some time.
So my question is simply this: How do you think education is played out in the Pokémon Universe?

We have been given so many little conflicting bits of information that I am incredibly stumped on this. In the anime and the video games we can see that there are schools that teach people to become Pokémon Trainers, however; where is the rest of the education? How do these people know how to count and spell?

Is one required to go to a regular school until they reach the age of ten? Perhaps after that they are given the option to continue on with their education or begin their Pokémon-oriented career...

What are your opinions on education in the Pokémon universe?
Or possibly better, what does Pokémon teach us?

I would have to say it's a anime so they inturn don't need to learn anything sinse it isn't real..... So I'm sorry but i don't see the point in this question.....

That's true, but I'm not just talking about the anime here.
I'm talking about the franchise in general. The creators go to such lengths to explain many aspects of the Pokémon world, yet they never fully explained how education worked. This thread can be viewed as a discussion of the things a Pokémon school might "teach" as well.

Well yeah but why do they need to deal with that? I don't see a point?

Eh but who knows it seems like a good question that that isn't relevant though but oh well.

My opinions on education in the pokemon universe,hmm...
i think you hit it on the head, they get taught about how to become a trainer until ten, then they can become a trainer, it seems simple.
They probably get taught the basics of math and the alphabet since its really needed in marts.
If one potion =¥300, and you have ¥700, how much potions can you buy?
That seems something that would be taught in pokemon schools.
Besides, common knowledge is needed in everything, whether it be a game or real life.
the only thing that weird about pokemon is the terrible underpopulation.
there are only 4 houses in a city, and its usually a house with no beds.
But don't forget that there were the (easy) math problems in hearthome city, that can count as education.the creators just go through the whole pokemon world because they feel that you already know math and how to read, so they won't bother teaching you something you probably already know.
there is still real life education in pokemon, but it is scarce.

In the country system of PokEd, there are 3 branches School choices that make up the power of decision for the person

    there is:

    • PokePrep after 3rd grade
    • Middle School for regular ongoing Education
    • McDonald's

Ash went to PokePrep. Or at least that's my theory. Weird education system.

Well, I think the anime has to do with Friendship as well.
The games, to me, they enhance kids' strategy abilities.

Not exactly what I made the thread for, but that's a good point as well.
    What does Pokémon teach us?

The games can definetly teach strategy and a little mathematics when it comes to items.
The anime can teach younger children life morals while giving them a few laughs.

Well, that's what I was saying.
When I posted, it meant for us. :P

Well there are the school children in the game and pokenerds with books and what not so I think they may go to school when they are younger and they have tougher courses and stuff and at a certain age you graduate and that is where the games pick up. Just a thought.

You see, this is my belief. It seems that children go to school and learn the basics of education until they reach the age of ten. It seems that ten is age that people seem to gratuate in the Pokémon world, and upon this time they can make the decision to become a trainer or persue other professions.
    Good post, Spartan.

I always imagined they have "normal" schools as well, just that those who wish to become trainers are allowed to drop out to do that at age 10. But they may have school that extends beyond that...after all, not EVERYONE becomes a trainer.

actually the kids in the schools and daycares are even younger than ten and they are pokemon based. I guess this is just one of the things not meant to relate to the real world.

    Thanks XD

Also, if you look at the people (other trainers you battle) in the game and you think about it then you will see that all kids who look under ten are with an adult or an older sister and kids above ten or around 10 (like bug catchers and youngster) have Pokemon.

I think that there may be a college level as well for people who choose to not become a pokemon trainer and they become a professor or they go into a different position. Like for the electricians they have Voltorbs and other electric pokemon so they probably go to college when they are older and receive a pokemon. I really wish that this would be explained somehow by game freak and nintendo. :)

It can be very, very annoying. Ever since you made this thread it has got me thinking o.0

The kids must be uber smart to be able to graduate with a good education at 10. Maybe they skip kindergarten and they go to school at a younger age.

Eh but who knows it seems like a good question that that isn't relevant though but oh well.

Because maybe some people in the pokemon world are actually interested in college rather than running around dog fighting with creatures and being about as educated as 5 yr olds.

They get microchips placed in their heads as babies about common knowledge. Then go to school to learn pokemon.

Then why not get Pokemon chips too? thats a great idea! :/

You have to think about how much info the human brain
is really meant to handle. Two chips at birth? Say hello to Cancer Island!

Hello Cancer Island. I forgo why we were talking about brain chips anyway! lol

Hasn't anyone read the Pokemon novel by the anime's scenario writer?
It explains that compulsory education ends at 10, and the child is allowed to either pursue further education or become a trainer.
