Do chips* bags have too much or not enough air in them?

Because, like, the air protects the chips, but it also is a lie about how much you're getting.

Depends on the brand I think. I've noticed that certain brands of chips, usually tortilla chips, have a higher chip to air ratio than most. Lays is really bad though about making the bag mostly air....

Bit of both so I tend to wait until it's cheaper to buy two for less than one.

I've found the best chips to buy in ratio to the air pocket are fritos. because they're small and easily intertwine with each other you get A LOT of fritos compared to the bag size and amount of air in it

I think that companies put so much air in the bag, not to be cheap or as a marketing ploy, but rather to prevent the chips from breaking apart before consumers have the opportunity to eat them. This seems to be more of a thing in smaller bags than bigger bags.

Although Lays seems to be the most notorious one, so maybe its a marketing ploy on their part lol

Pringles is the best, that's like.... not too much air. depends on which pringles you get though, the big cans are great, the small cans, eh.

Pringles do give you a lot of chips and very little air, but the cardboard packaging protects the chips more than a bag, so I guess they can.

The 'air' in chip bags, to me, is nothing more than packaging filler to make the bags look like they have more than they actually have.

I can't say I've looked at a bag of them recently and thought "there's far too much air in here." Maybe for smaller bags, but not larger ones, those seem to be okay for me.

The air has a function: it's a preservative that keeps the chips fresh, so that they won't come out stale after you buy the bag and before you open it.

That being said: LESS AIR, DAMNIT!

<p>I usually grab at bags gently and scope out ones that are more full than others. I've had some successes in finding relatively filled bags, but yeah, I find more and more bags of chips are more air than product, and it makes you really wonder what you're actually paying for.</p>

I think part of the problem there is, since chip bags are sold by weight (as far as I know), some bags will have a lot of their chips (say, over 50% of the volume) already broken or crushed when you go to open them, giving the vibe that you've been ripped off, whereas bags that appear to have more will have more of the chips intact and/or not as crumbled up.
