This thread is in dedication to dating simulators, which is a gaming subgenre that's popular in Japan. Without further ado, I present to you the following questions:

What is your experience with dating sims, if you've played any? Which dating sims have you played? Do you believe dating sims negatively impacts gamers from dating real women (seeing as there has been discussions regarding Japan's decreasing population with dating sims being partially to blame)?

I played some that weren't Japanese production and Visual Novels that are considered to belong to dating sim category. Oh, and I cannot forget Persona =D

And... I don't think it affects real interactions anyhow... plus, those who play dating sims (including me) play them for 2D girls, not to use it in real world.

Now that you've mentioned it, I wonder if I should count Fire Emblem Awakening as a dating sim as well. XD

This well-respected web show host would like to disagree with you.

I like searching out weird visual novels/dating sims. I really liked Hatoful Boyfriend and I think that counts. There's nothing about them to me that interests me on a romantic level - most of them are dating women anyway and I'm a straight woman so I would never fall for any of the characters. I just find the stories fun and I like the method of storytelling.

As far as the dating sims having a detrimental effect on society, I don't really feel qualified to comment on that even though I find it interesting. I do know that I had a good friend in high school that became too obsessed with anime characters. He developed a crush on a girl that hated him, because he thought she was just being tsundere. She berated him constantly but he kept going at it just like a dating sim, waiting for the turnaround...never happened. But I've only known one person like that and dozens upon dozens of people that like anime/dating sims but aren't like that. I do think ethically if we argue that dating sims give men unrealistic expectations of women and relationships that then translate into real life, we're starting down a road full of grey area - when is a game "good enough" to influence real life? If that game has a negative impact on the world, should we discourage people playing it? It's the road violence in video games deals with every day.

    Do you mean the otome games? I have no experience with them whatsoever, but I actually want to play a number of them. Nowadays I see that instead of porting them to PSP, developers have started developing them for the iPhone, and Android devices, which is a good alternative, but I'd still prefer the ones that are on the PSP. Sometimes I want to import them from Japan, but I would have no idea what the dialogue says ;;

The only dating sim game I've ever played was Hatoful Boyfriend and I feel like if all of them embraced how ridiculous the premise is like that one, I'd be really into the genre. But any other ones I've tried to play were just too hard to immerse myself in. (I can't remember what they were now though.)

To that extent, I've never understood how people say it can have any real effect on actual dating. I feel like if people aren't trying to date/reproduce/whatever, it has more to do with their personal values and hobbies (as a whole) rather than any specific interest in dating sims...

Where does he disagree with me?
I said those people play it for 2D girls to avoid 3D and he confirmed it ;)

I meant "real interactions" as male x female, not "real interactions" as interactions all together.

When you said people played it for 2D girls, I thought you meant they're only playing it for fun. The video showed that people take dating sims seriously and avoid real girls as much as possible.

Do you mean the otome games?

That's what they're actually called? Well yes, of course.

If you've watched the video I linked, you see how dating sims are negatively impacting Japan's population.

Thank god Japan made Love Plus, a game where the girlfriend asks the player what personality she should have, and changes for her boyfriend!

I played with them a few times for the lols mostly and they were fun at times, at other times it was really weird, I don't think any real life interactions were disrupted, not really anyways.

(seeing as there has been discussions regarding Japan's decreasing population with dating sims being partially to blame)?
I can honestly say that I don't believe that a Video game could cause and entire country to experience negative population growth.

But back on topic, I haven't played any dating sims. I mean I really don't like dating in real life, and I don't want an emulated version...

Okay so the only proper one I've played was Hatoful Boyfriend (Ryouta is my husbando). I've also played Katawa Shojo but it's made in English so I feel like it almost doesn't count. They're a subgenre of the Visual Novel game genre really. I have Stein's Gate and Clannad but I haven't gotten around to them yet. I love VN's though.

Anyway 2d girls are better than 3d girls. And 2d pigeon boys are way better than dating real pigeons. After playing Hatoful Boyfriend I doubt I could ever date a real pigeon. My expectations are too high.

There's also a short one where you date a T-Rex and a full one where you date an Alpaca. I highly recommend that if you liked Hatoful. The T-Rex was made in English as well but the Alpaca one wasn't and also the translation is terrible which just makes it better.

What are they called? I loved Hatoful. I did 100% in like 3 days of that game.
