    [PokeCommunity.com] Crossword/Word Search/Pokemon Pairing Word Game

    Hosted by vaporeon7 and Scarf

It's PokeCommunity's 10th anniversary and we're celebrating in this thread with some fun word games. What games are they, you ask. We have crosswords. We have word searches. We have something new and different to further test your word skills and Pokemon knowledge. Anyone can play, so get your pencils ready!

    The Games

Every day of the Get-Together we will be posting a new puzzle for you to solve. You simply follow the instructions for each puzzle and send us your answers via PM to both vaporeon7 and Scarf. Once you've sent in your answers post in this thread to let us know that you did (in case we somehow don't get your PMs) and let everyone know how much fun you had. (You don't actually have to say how much fun you had.)

Some of the games (like the word search) will need you to send us an image. You'll need to use an image hosting site like TinyPic, ImageShack, Photobucket, or whatever other method you have available, so familiarize yourself with uploading images if you haven't already.

    How To Play

Like we said, there are three types of games you can play: crossword, word search, and a word pairing game (details below). For each of the games there are a couple of general rules:

    Crosswords

A crossword puzzle asks you to fill out a chart using the clues as your guide.

    • Answer the [Across] clues from left to right → and the [Down] clues from top to bottom ↓, one letter per space.
    • There is one correct answer for each clue. If your answer doesn't fit, maybe it's not the right answer.
    • All clues must be answered and filled in for the puzzle to be complete.

    Word Search

A word search asks you to find a group of words hidden in the puzzle.

    • Words appear only once in each word search. Be careful you don't fall for any of our tricky words.
    • Words may be vertical, horizonal, forwards, backwards, and/or diagonal.
    • All words must be found for the puzzle to be complete.

    Word Pairing

A word pairing game asks you to find what two Pokémon both fit the word clue.

    • Each clue has EXACTLY TWO Pokémon that fit it. You have to guess BOTH correctly.
    • You must use all the spaces in a clue. (For example, a clue of "S L O W _ _ _ _" could ONLY be answered with Slowking and Slowpoke because Slowbro is only 7 letters long and the clue is 8 letters long.)
    • All the matching letters will be shown. (You won't see a clue like "_ L _ F A _ _ _" for Clefable/Clefairy. Their clue would show every letter they have in common: "C L E F A _ _ _".)
    • Spelling obviously counts if you want to get the right answers, but if you misspell when you submit your guesses that won't count against you.
    • Pokémon with non-alphabetic characters (Farfetch'd, Ho-Oh , Mr. Mime, Mime Jr., Nidoran♀, Nidoran♂, Porygon2, and Porygon-Z) will not show up anywhere in this quiz so don't worry about guessing those.
    • Again, you have to get all the pairs to complete the puzzle.

You can submit your answers one at a time, or all at once.

    Timeline

The first puzzle starts on Day 1 of PSX and a new puzzle will be posted each day after.

Day 1, Sept 24th: An easy-difficulty crossword challenge
Day 2, Sept 25th: An easy-difficulty word search challenge
Day 3, Sept 26th: An easy-difficulty word pairing challenge
    Day 4, Sept 27th: A medium-difficulty crossword challenge
    Day 5, Sept 28th: A medium-difficulty word search challenge
    Day 6, Sept 29th: A medium-difficulty word pairing challenge
Day 7, Sept 30th: One hard-difficult challenge of each type of puzzle

You can submit your answers any time up through to October 7th.

Okay so I've been told I'm allowed to double post in my planning thread, hopefully Scarf will end up posting here lots too!

I think as far as times go, we should release a new puzzle every day, so that people have time to do each one, and don't get overwhelmed and put off by one big lot of puzzles to begin with. This would mean that one word search would be released on day 1, a crossword on day 2, pairing game on day 3, and so on until the last day, where I think it would be good to go out with a bang and have all three. This would mean there would be three of each puzzle throughout the event. I also think starting with easier puzzles and then getting harder as days pass is the idea.

One thing that happened poorly last year was checking of puzzles, so we have to make sure that we pay special attention to that.

I've finally got access to this area!

One new puzzle each day sounds good to me. That makes for a total of 9 puzzles, 3 of each type. I have the pairing games covered. I just need to break them down into 3 different groups of difficultly (which shouldn't be hard - I'll get working on that in a moment or two) and I've got a crossword (which I'd say is medium or hard difficulty) and word search (easy or medium) already that I've shown you. Guess I'll post them here again? (Or should we keep them secret for now?) If you're already working on more puzzles let me know which ones so I don't do the same thing.

I'll double check all the puzzles you make if you'll check mine. We can hopefully avoid any mistakes that way. Sound good?

I can also try to work on some css, but I'm gonna have to fiddle with that since I'm not that experienced with it.

And we can probably take turns on who posts which puzzles. So like:

    Day 1: Easy crossword (vaporeon7)
Day 2: Easy word search (Scarf)
Day 3: Easy word pairing (vaporeon7)
    Day 4: Medium crossword (Scarf)
Day 5: Medium word search (vaporeon7)
Day 6: Medium word pairing (Scarf)
Day 7: All three (harder?) puzzles (vaporeon7)

That way if one of us loses internet or something we'd only be a day off and could probably cover for it. And then we can use the next couple of days after the event to go over the submissions and all that.

I'd be okay accepting PMs for people's guesses. Or would it be better if they sent them to both of us?

And do you want to have just two emblems, one for people who participated and one for people who got EVERYTHING? Or do you have something else in mind?

I guess I'll get working on stuff and wait to hear from you!

    EDIT:

Here's a quick mockup for the css we can use and how we can organize the thread.

Some intro stuff can start off here. ("Hello! Welcome to the blah blah...")

This event includes several fun word games. To play, follow the instructions of each game, then submit your answers to either vaporeon7 or Scarf. Some of the games (like the word search) will need you to send us an image so you'll need to use an image hosting site like TinyPic, ImageShack, or Photobucket so familiarize yourself with uploading images if you haven't already.

There are going to be a variety of games presented each day of the Get-Together:

Day 1: An easy-difficulty crossword challenge
Day 2: An easy-difficulty word search challenge
Day 3: An easy-difficulty word pairing challenge
    Day 4: A medium-difficulty crossword challenge
    Day 5: A medium-difficulty word search challenge
    Day 6: A medium-difficulty word pairing challenge
Day 7: One hard-difficult challenge of each type of puzzle

You do not have to finish each puzzle on the day it is given, but if you could try to submit them in the order they're presented that would be appreciated. You can submit your answers one by one or in groups.

    So far we have:
    Easy crossword
    Easy word search
    Easy word pairing
    Medium crossword
    Medium word search
    Medium word pairing
    Hard crossword
    Hard word search
    Hard word pairing
I'm happy to do the rest, unless there was something that you really wanted to do. Don't post them in the thread, we'll keep them to PMs between us, so that other event organisers can participate.

I'll double check all the puzzles you make if you'll check mine. We can hopefully avoid any mistakes that way. Sound good?

I'll check all the puzzles you've made later tonight. And PM you mine when they're ready, some of which by tomorrow.

And we can probably take turns on who posts which puzzles. So like:

    Day 1: Easy crossword (vaporeon7)
Day 2: Easy word search (Scarf)
Day 3: Easy word pairing (vaporeon7)
    Day 4: Medium crossword (Scarf)
Day 5: Medium word search (vaporeon7)
Day 6: Medium word pairing (Scarf)
Day 7: All three (harder?) puzzles (vaporeon7)

That way if one of us loses internet or something we'd only be a day off and could probably cover for it. And then we can use the next couple of days after the event to go over the submissions and all that.

We can do that if you'd like, the other option is that the first post is just edited everyday with the puzzle added. But I'm happy to go with your idea, but we still need to link everyday's post in the opening post, so that it is easy to find.

I'd be okay accepting PMs for people's guesses. Or would it be better if they sent them to both of us?

We both should get PMed by everyone.

And do you want to have just two emblems, one for people who participated and one for people who got EVERYTHING? Or do you have something else in mind?

Two emblems sound like a good idea. What would you like to have on them? And do you want to design them/have someone in mind to design them?

Here's a quick mockup for the css we can use and how we can organize the thread.

I like the general look of the CSS, but I think we need a snazzy banner to make things look super pretty.

I guess I'll try to work on what we can say in the opening post, the welcome and rules and all that. Is there anything really important that we need to say in them? I'd think the most important stuff is letting people know there are going to be several puzzles, that we want them to PM both of us the answers, and how much time they have to send in their answers.

If we post one puzzle a day starting on the 24th then the last puzzle will get posted on the 30th. How much time should we have after that? I would say no more than a week, but maybe not even a week?

    So far we have:
    Easy crossword
    Easy word search
    Easy word pairing
    Medium crossword
    Medium word search
    Medium word pairing
    Hard crossword
    Hard word search
    Hard word pairing
I'm happy to do the rest, unless there was something that you really wanted to do. Don't post them in the thread, we'll keep them to PMs between us, so that other event organisers can participate.
If you want to do the rest, that's okay, but if you need me to do one that's okay, too. :] I don't have any super awesome ideas at the moment so if you do then run with them.

I'll check all the puzzles you've made later tonight. And PM you mine when they're ready, some of which by tomorrow.
    Okay!

We can do that if you'd like, the other option is that the first post is just edited everyday with the puzzle added. But I'm happy to go with your idea, but we still need to link everyday's post in the opening post, so that it is easy to find.
That sounds like a better idea, actually. Not as messy. Let's do that.

We both should get PMed by everyone.
    Okay!

Two emblems sound like a good idea. What would you like to have on them? And do you want to design them/have someone in mind to design them?
I can try to design something. I have no idea what they should be aside from one we give to people who complete everything and one to people who just participate though. I'll try to come up with something temporary for now and we can improve on it tomorrow or so.

I like the general look of the CSS, but I think we need a snazzy banner to make things look super pretty.
Yes, a banner would be great. Again, I have no idea what it should be though, like how big it should be, etc. But I can try to mock something up again.

    EDIT AGAIN:

    Here are some possible emblems.

I loved it all Scarf, and I got the thread approved. I just have to do these puzzles now. I also chose the 7th as a time limit for entries as it is a week after GTX and the release date for B2W2 in the US.

Is there anything we really need to discuss? Any other ideas?
