I first found out about this little strategy here: smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23085

    On smogon.

About halfway down the battle report the chap sets up his bellyzard and basically cleans the floor with his opponent. Now I have known about bellyzard before, but was alway put off as any old gengar, 'zam, weavile etc or anything with a speed higher that his will cause it issues. However I had never contemplated using the salac berry to bump up speed.

So I stuck a salac berry on my bellyzard, and went into battle tower to test it out:

    Substitute first
    Bellydrum next,

But the salac berry doesn't activate.....I'm not sure why, when this chaps one clearly did. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks in advance!

I dont know it should activate, maybe you did something wrong?

Berries activate when your health is at 33% right?

So if you made a sub, that leaves you with 75%, and it would stop bellydrum from cutting your HP down to half, so the berry wouldn't activate.

    I think :S

    Substitute cuts health by 25%
Belly drum Cuts health by 50%

    (I've tested that)

Then you are left with 25% health. I was wondering, does the berry not activate, if you have the substitute still out (i.e. if the opponent doesn't knock it out the turn of the bellydrum)? If that's the case that would explain it as once the charizard gets hit again (if it survives) it munches down on the berry.

If the substitute is still in play, the berry wont get eaten, no

The berry gets eaten even with Substitute, but it's 25% or below health you have to be at.

For best results, optimize your HP amount so it's EXACTLY divisible by 4. For example, Charizard with 280 or 320 HP would do a good amount of help.

Salac Berry, as well as Liechi, Ganlon, Petaya, Apicot, Lansat, Starf, Micle & Custap only activate when the HP are BELOW 25%, thus they won't activate when you use both Substitute and Belly Drum because they leave you with 25% HP and those berries need your HP to be 24% or lower.

Ah that clears it up then (damn bulbapedia for giving me wrong info!!).

    Thanks chaps

exactly what iceman said. it's important that your total hp be divisible by 4 to hit that 25% mark.

Many thanks, just gave it a hp up to sort out it's hp at level 50 (what all my mates play at) and it has done the job perfectly!

    Cheers all.
