Okay I've not been playing the newer gen games I didn't play anything after hgss nor havive I kept up with the anime...
    What the hell is fairy?
Pokemon types were based on real things or elements
Fire water grass electric ice Rock ground...
With the additional man made steel...
Psychic having to do with mind and fight having to do with the body
    Ghost behind death
    Flying was basically air
Bug was .... Well... Bug.... Dark being evil
Poison being a type given to a pokemon that was venomous or had toxic chemical qualities
Dragon was like a hybrid type
Sort of like above all other types...

    Also aren't pokemon aliens?
I think I remember in the anime someone stated that pokemon came to earth from space...

How does fairy fit into this...
Fairy being magical it doesn't seem logical
Also how can you just add a new type
So nobody knew that there were fairies before?
    Where they all dumb asshats?

it sucks in every single character of the being

Fairy is fairy. I don't know what you're not getting about that, honestly.
Some pokemon were from space. Some were already on pokeEarth.
And they've added new pokemon into the newer generations before, like dark and steel, so adding in a new type isn't new.

I really like the fairy types. Gave a lot of the normal types a bit more of an advantage.

The Fairy type was created to counteract the fact that Dragon was the dominant type in Gens IV-V. The reason why Fairy is strong against Dragon is because in folklore, dragons were portrayed in antagonistic roles, and the fairies (usually the protagonistic roles) were the ones who defeated them in the end. The same principle also applies to why Dark is weak to Fairy, though I can't put a finger on why Fairy is strong against Fighting.

Fairy also gave a reason to use Steel and Poison offensively, as it's weak to both types. Fairies were depicted as vulnerable to toxins or cold iron in that case.

PlatinumDude's reasoning pretty much explains everything, Dragon-types became so prominent offensively in the 4th and 5th Generation and there wasn't much that could stand up to their sheer strength because their stats were higher than most other Pokemon, even if they weren't Legendary.

As for the explanation behind the Fairy-type's advantages - Dragons were usually portrayed as the antagonists and were defeated by the hero (Fairy), Dark's weakness to Fairy also fits here given the type is called "Evil" in Japan. As for Fairy being strong against Fighting, it's due to the Fairy being portrayed as calm and that makes it overcome brute force (Fighting).

The introduction of Fairy made Steel and Poison more offensive use, due to being the only types strong against it. As mentioned by PlatinumDude above, these weaknesses are based on fairies being vulnerable to toxins and cold iron. Still, despite what many think about Fairy Pokemon so far, I like how diverse the designs have been with the resident Pokemon so far.
