As I lay out ant traps and spray bug heavy spots and go "Oh! A spider!" when I see a spider, I wonder, do any of you have bug-prone homes? How have you gotten rid of pests? Will rat traps work on mice?

I live inside the forest area, hence seeing many creatures at home are possible, ranging from bugs, snakes, crabs, insects, monitor lizards, chameleon, gecko, scorpions, etc. So yes it is prone to many things.

Carpenter Ants infest our home once in three-four months, and that is one of the nice things to happen according to me. Whenever that happens, our home becomes pest free for very long time, because ants take away all the pests from home, either dead or partial dead with them. And that includes their army carrying away cockroaches, geckos, etc. with them. And our home becomes pest free for long time!

And good thing is that those carpenter ants don't trouble our edible items, nor they get into our clothes, book shelves and neither they attack us. So we are thankful for their presence, and hence we usually give some foods to them as a gesture. We don't kill ants at any cost. Although Fire Ants are annoying for sure.

Will rat traps work on mice?
It had worked whenever we used, but my father also use some sort of solid cookie-like chemical substance to lure the rats. I don't know it's name or chemical name hence can't help you over it.

In summer we do mainly get ants, lots of flies and eventually wasps, bumblebees, ecc. We do get some bugs in autumn as well. I do have a garden, so that's why. Please take bugs and stuff out of my view. I am quite scared of them.

i get lots of spiders all year round and flies in summer. Flies i squash 'em spiders i get rid of the cobwebs

There was 1 night someone (me) forgot to close window and a wild bat landed on me! Had to wake up my neighbor and hold up towels so he can catch the bat with his net.

    So... keeping windows shut helps!

Ants will make their way into the home every year... and I will massacre them every time. Mosquitos are the more annoying ones, I have to deal with them often daily during summer.
Flies are not a problem at all (since I only ever occasionally get one inside) as long as I throw away anything that contained food and food remains on time. Occasionally a wasp will make it's way inside and I shall flatten it as well.
Bees and bumblebees also occasionally make it inside, but those are not complete savages like wasp and can be escorted outside. spiders I leave alone as long as they don't go near my bed or the toilet as they help with Mosquitos.
Aside from that I occasionally find beetles that I escort out and I also occasionally see... apparently they're called woodlice in English. Regardless, I flatten those.

Mice will make their way inside every now and then and it'll take a while to get rid of them with traps and poison etc.

I live in a rural area. One of my parents once left a door open for too long and we had a Duck inside just chilling in the hallway next to a bucket of water lol

I live in Australia so there will always be bugs, but fortunately we're near the city center on the 1st floor (called the second floor in some places lol, so one floor up from ground level) so we don't get that many. But sometimes a moth, fly, cricket, or even a cockroach (they're giant here!!) will make it in. And if it's one of those last two I will be very afraid and need to get my husband to spray them. Ugh. Really dislike bugs.
