I couldn't think of a 6th pokemon to round out team or an item for kabutops. Please help!

The title says "sorta rain dance team", so I'll rate/help as if a rain dance team was the goal.

Bluntly, alot of things need to be changed. Rain Dance teams rely on very few switches, because switching wastes a valuable turn of rain. They're heavy offense teams who's strategy is basically: set up rain, switch to sweeper asap, sweep.

You need at least two dedicated pokemon to set up rain; usually your lead, and another pokemon mid-game (can be the 6th pokemon you can't think of). Examples of good leads are Electrode and Persian, both of whom can set up rain quickly and leave quickly (via explosion and u-turn, respectively). Bronzong or Registeel are good examples of dedicated rain dance pokemon that can set it up later in the game, then explode for a free switch in.

Kabutops is a horrid lead. It's not all that fast, and takes hits like a wet paper bag. However, Kabutops should have a valuable role on this team with it's ability swift swim, which doubles it's speed in the rain (making it faster than just about anything). With a huge base attack, Kabutops is a perfect candidate to come in after a Bronzong has just set up rain and exploded. STAB + the power increase from the rain makes Kabutops's waterfalls rip through just about anything, even pokemon that resist it. It would be wise to add another swift swimmer in addition to Kabutops, such as Ludicolo, Kingdra, or Floatzel.

The strategy I've used for my own rain dance team (see sig) is to have Persian and Registeel as my dedicated rain dancers, Kingdra and Kabutops (both with swift swim ability) as my main sweepers, Starmie for support (knows surf, rain dance, thunder, rapid spin), and Alakazam as a late game sweeper to cover any common counters to rain dance teams.

EDIT: Give Kabutops a life orb.

Well, that's not entirely true. Kabutops isn't a horrible lead if you give it the right moveset. But in a Rain Dance team, Kabutops should never be a lead EVER.

Hey, try reading this article. It will teach you all you need to know about Rain Dance teams. It's extremely helpful and tells you basically what all Rain teams need:
