There are such things as Jumbo Pokemon cards, so what you saw was likely real.

If your old cards aren't Japanese, hold them up against a light. If you can see the Poke Ball through the card, it's fake. Also, if the text seems kind of fuzzy, it's fake. If there are a bunch of typos on the card or if there is no accent mark above the e in Pokemon, it's fake. If the holofoil looks like hearts or butterflies, it's fake. If the entire card (template and illustration) are holo, it's fake (and most likely a sticker - with the exception of Ancient Mew). If the card is a reverse holo and is from a set before the Legendary Collection, it's fake. If it's a reverse holo, but the flavour text background is non-holo, it's fake. If your Poliwhirl says it evolves from Oddish, it's fake. If the card is not the same size as an official card, it's fake (excluding Jumbos). If there is no "TM" next to the Pokemon logo on the backside of the card, it's fake. If the energy symbols look bloated (like the one's on actual Energy cards), it's fake (with the exception of the CoroCoro Jumbos).

There are many ways to tell if a card is fake or not.

^ Above poster pretty much covered everything, just wanted to add that if you link some clear pictures of the cards you aren't sure about here, we can tell you if they are fake or not.
Also wanted to add that the jumbo cards are real, but not legal for play (you can't put one in your deck).
