Best and worst movie genres

When it comes to movies everyone has that certain genre that they just love to watch while at the same time we all have that genre we loathe to see.

- So what are some of your favorite and least favorite movie genres and why?


As for my favorites I tend to lean towards Western, Documentary, Adventure, and Historic movies. I really go for movies based on true stories which I tend to find within these genres. Plus I enjoy the whole "adventure/journey factor" that also commonly presents itself.

My least favorite genres tend to be Musicals, Romance, and Horror/Thrillers. I find that most movies I have seen under these genres are exceedingly cheesy or just too sappy to watch. Although when it comes to horror or thriller movies I do go for the older or classic ones. I think the newer movies that fall under the horror/thriller category focus too much on the scare factor and not the actual plot or acting.

My favorites are Westerns, action, comedy, and adventure.

My least favorite are musicals and romance movies.

I don't know if there's a 'best' or 'favorite' genre for since a good movie can come from any genre. Well, almost any genre (see below). In general I think I learn toward the broad categories of drama and suspense. For a great example you have something like Black Swan which is utterly fantastic and show how good a thrilling, suspenseful movie can be. I'm also fond of 'fun' movies that don't try to insult your intelligence (see below again).

Romantic Comedies are the worst genre of movie. Period. Anyone who has seen one knows why. They were probably invented by Hollywood marketers as a way to make money. I believe plot is very important to movies and these just don't have anything in that area that can stand on their own. They're better than all-out romances though since romances don't try to hedge their audience appeal with some bad comedy element that expects you to find it entertaining and fresh when you already know inside that every romantic comedy is exactly the same as the last one.

I could agree with you if you limited yourself to modern romcoms, but older ones have the capacity to not only be very romantically moving but also hilarious. Something like His Girl Friday (which is available legally on YouTube) is a wonderful example of a really funny film that happens to feature a will-they-won't-they romance. The whole genre of screwball comedy was founded upon this idea of the battle of the sexes and it worked really well.

I also agree that a movie can be great irrespective of genre. A good movie is a good movie because it has good acting, direction, writing, cinematography, editing and all the other stuff that goes into film production. That being said, I do have a tendency to avoid Westerns and action films and go for more independent drama. But a great film can truly transcend genre, so one should always keep an open mind when it comes to stuff like this.

I really don't like Disaster movies. Most specifically Roland Emmerich. He must perish.

As for good, maybe... Nah. I'm not a big fan of genre cinema nor of the concept of genres in general, so yeah.

I'm a huge fan of action and adventure, but the plot and acting has to be spot on too. I really don't care for Michael Bay's over the top explosions and loose plots that seem to be there only to support the action, not vise versa like it should be. An example of what I do like is: Inglourious Basterds, Inception, The Dark Knight, and The Boondock Saints. I also like documentaries and SOME romantic comedies, but I feel a lot of those try and speed through a love process that should take longer than an hour and a half so things come off cliche and overdone and not that realistic.

As for genres I don't like, I hate horror and sci-fi and these also happen to be my friends favorite genres so I have to put up with them a lot which. Watching all these movies hasn't helped, but rather, reinforce why I don't like them. The acting is usually terrible and the plot always seems to stay the same. ~Killers are on the loose and people have to get away and yet they split up and have sex and get killed anyway~. I don't know, horrors don't do much for me :/

Horror is simultaneously my favourite and least favourite genre. All these ~blockbuster~ horror films that come out that simply base themselves around trying to make the watcher jump. I really can't stand them. Slashers, gorefests, shock horrors etc. not for me thanks.

Then there are the ones I like, a good horror shouldn't just be about shocking you, it should be something that gradually unsettles you and slowly scratches away at your mind; not trying to grab it and throw it around, because it just doesn't work unless you're about 11. So psychological horror is more up my street. I have yet to find a film that does it perfectly, but I thought films like The Shining, Eraserhead, The Wicker Man (1973), The Others, Duel, The Ring and Rosemary's Baby were all really good attempts. I can't really put my finger on what's missing for me, and I could be here all day with theories.

Similar sort of film genres, thrillers, mystery etc. are all amongst my favourites. As well as war films, films based on true stories and fantasy.

I dislike those sports movies where I just see a bunch of Americans freaking out over a football game. Going to echo the dislike of romantic comedies, as well as the majority of comedy in general. Rare for me to come across a comedy film I enjoy, but when I do I absolutely love it. But as Cat Dog said there's a good film in every genre. I tend to find a dislike a film not because of the genre, but because of the reasons it was made. There are some films that are quite clearly made just so all the people without taste will go out and pay to see it at the cinema (Sucker Punch I'm looking at you).
