Continuing on our never ending quest to determine the biology and laws of nature in the world of pokemon, we find our heroes pondering a most unusual yet reasonable question: are grass-type pokemon animals that look like vegetation or are they actually plants that move and jump and such?

i could maybe understand pokemon like treecko who has the attributes of grass but once he evolves and grows leaves, wtf?! is cacnea a cactus? are grass-types the plants of the pokemon world? If grass-type pokemon really are plants, are all the trees pokemon too?

    what do you guys think?

Yeah, i think most of them are animals with plant-like characteristics. the only exception to this would be Carnivine (Venus fly-trap), and Cacnea ( a cactus). Some, also are animals that actually do have plants growing on them. Like Sceptile's tail is a bush, Torterra has a tree growing out of his shell, Meganium has a flower growing around her neck, etc.

But plants and pokemon are two completely differnent things. You see flowers and trees in the pokemon world, and they most certainly are not pokemon.

Not all Grass Pokemon are plants, but there are Grass Pokemon with plant-like characteristics (like Jalorda, Yanappu, Yanakkie, Leafeon and Sceptile).

I dont think they are plants, but they might have simillar DNA

Well some grass types definitely look like a mix between an animal and vegetation. Case in point Sceptile. In a real life scenario you could come to the conclusion that Sceptile was just a normal lizard who lived amongst vegetation to an extreme point. Perhaps over time evolution took over and eventually Sceptile became more plant like due to its surroundings. I'd say the same for Leafeon, Venusaur, Meganium, Tropius, etc. In fact in Tropius's Ruby Pokedex entry it says, "The bunches of fruit around Tropius's neck are very popular with children. This Pokémon loves fruit, and eats it continuously. Apparently, its love for fruit resulted in its own outgrowth of fruit." That implies that Tropius simply grew something plant like from it's body over a certain amount of time. The same could be said for all animal/grass like Pokemon. Through sheer want or natural settings their body changed.

In the case of Paras and Parasect you're looking at a bug who has a parasite attached to it. Once Paras evolves into Parasect you're now looking at a bug that is under complete control of the parasite. Perhaps becoming more plant like then bug like. At the same time its basis was/is a bug.

As for the Pokemon who truly look like walking plants I believe they are so. For instance grass Pokemon like Oddish, Bellsprout, Roselia, Cacnea, etc. remind me (if you've ever seen it) of the mandrakes from Harry Potter *Spoiler below for picture*. It's a plant, but has animal like qualities.

    Spoiler:

Some of them, but not all.

They carry plant features but they amy be more animal-like than plant-like.

^ I agree with this post.

so some time in the past, along the evolutionary road, an animal pokemon mated with a plant and crossed DNAs?!

i think grass types are the plants of the pokemon world but i guess trees are just too big to actually move like most grass pokemon so they just stand there

Here is the way I see it.

Some grass pokemon, are simply animals with plant-like characteristics. Like Treecko, Chikorita, and Bulbasaur.

But the ones like Carnivine, oddish, Vileplume, Bellsprout family, and seedot, are actually plants, with animal-like characteristics.

There are regular trees, and flowers, that are not pokemon, just like there is regular birds and stuff, that are not pokemon.

Well, there are some very large pokemon already so I don't think size alone would account for that. And I don't think an animal would have to 'mate' with a plant for some kind of hybrid to be formed. An animal and plant could have a symbiotic relationship and technically be two different life forms while in practical terms being a single creature.

Of course the evolutionary history of pokemon might not mirror our own so the distinctions of plants and animals might not be so clearly divided.

Most are plants, but some are just grass types because of what moves they learn and the environment they live in.

It depends on the Pokemon. Some are a combination of the two. Leafeon, for instance, uses its leaves like any plant would and produces energy from sunlight and all. Its body would probably work a lot like a plant's, but at the same time it's clearly an "animal". Some, like Sunflora, are more plantlike than animal-like. Sunflora'd probably be some sort of plant that evolved to gain full consciousness and the ability to move. And then there are some like the aforementioned Treecko that aren't really plants; they just have abilities and characteristics that associate with plant life.
