[PokeCommunity.com] 5th Gen Pokemon of the Week: Oshawott!

Oshawott is a Sea Otter Pokémon who is a pure Water type! It evolves into Dewott at level 17, and when it's fully evolved, it becomes a Samurott at level 36! It's also one of the three starter pokemon that you can obtain from Professor Juniper, or from Bianca on B2/W2.

It's most notable feature is its scalchop (the seashell on it's body) that it carries with it at all times. It's used for cracking hard berries, or even for battle so it can use moves like Razor Shell! It's moves are as followed via level up:

--- Tackle
5 Tail Whip
7 Water Gun
11 Water Sport
13 Focus Energy
17 Razor Shell
19 Fury Cutter
23 Water Pulse
25 Revenge
29 Aqua Jet
31 Encore
35 Aqua Tail
37 Retaliate
41 Swords Dance
43 Hydro Pump

Now for some discussion! What do you think of Oshawott? Did you choose it for your starter pokemon and why? Why not? What do you think of the overall design of Oshawott? Do you think 'Oshawott' is a great name for this pokemon? If you want to rename this pokemon, what would you rename this pokemon to be? Do you have any other thoughts? Post em' here!

If you guys have any suggestions for the next 5th gen pokemon of the week, feel free to let me know!

Oh man, can we talk about how everyone HATED Osha when Gen 5 was revealed?I don't know if I've ever seen so much salt on PC.

And yet, the little guy is the only Unova starter I haven't taken all the way to the Elite Four in a Gen 5 nuzlocke. XD I love the little guy! His design, his color scheme, and he was quite frankly hilarious in the anime.

I remember that, ahaha, actually there was some craziness at this site called Marriland at the time too... they liked the trainers, but hated the pokemon, especially Oshawott. @.@

With me, this is the only pokemon who I've used all the way through the games. :] But yeah, this pokemon is really cool; and it's pretty amazing on the anime! Fallin' in love constantly and stuff~

kudos shawn for featuring my mascot ily

Anyways, my first reaction when I saw the three starters was like "okay these guys look pretty decent" but there was always one that stood out to me, and it was that adorable otter with the shell... then I saw the anime and it was so damn cute and ended up becoming my new fave Pokemon right away. It pretty much sealed the deal on who I was going to pick when I would eventually play B/W.

Since playing Black after getting it as a gift for my 19th birthday, I was just way excited to finally explore the wonderful land of Unova with that adorable sea otter as my companion. Oshy did me well in the game with its balanced stats and decent pool of attacks, and since then I literally always pick the otter in pretty much every B/W and B2/W2 playthrough since.

If I were to imagine Oshawott with a different name, I could have seen it being "Wotter" like many were speculating before the English name reveals, but I'm happy with how it turned out anyway.

Oshawott was the first starter I liked out of Unova's selection, and I used it for my first White playthrough but I didn't care for it. Now, I would actually say it's my least favorite, because at least Snivy gets Contrary and Tepig is really cute, even if its evolutions are a little lackluster. I do have a cute nickname for Oshawott's line, though! I named mine Sashimi - because Sashimi is similar to Samurott, and it seems really appropriate as they are otter-like Pokémon who uses its shell to attack.

I actually like Oshawott quite a bit, out of all the starter types Water is my least favourite but I think it's pretty cute in its own right. I chose it on my first time through Black (don't exactly remember why) and I remember it being pretty great to use, even if I was really underleveled by the end. As for name, anything I'd come up with would probably sound even more stupid and I can't just pass up all the Metal Gear Solid references with all three of the starters.

I think Oshawott is a fairly solid Pokemon. My first play through of Black i chose the little water type due to my habit to always choose Water types the first time i play a game. (seriously though, i have strange pattern of choosing my starters lol that is until X screwed things up) I remember really liking it and if i had to choose I would choose it more times than not. Tat scalchop of its is actually pretty darn slick, especially in the anime and its use as a defense tactic. That really made me more fond of the Pokemon. I was so sad when it had to evolve so quickly! Hands down my favorite starter in Gen 5

When I first saw the announcement of the starters, Snivy (at the time it was called Smugleaf due to fans) caught my eye and honestly if I were to get the game on day one release I would pick Snivy, but due to the anime and I only played the game years after the release, I picked Oshawott instead because of how loveable he is in the anime.

Spoiler: The lovely Oshawott <3
Spoiler:

I picked him in my Pokemon Black run and I nicknamed him based on a famous samurai called Musashi since Oshawott evolves into a cool-looking samurai otter. I really enjoyed the decent moves he had especially the Aqua Tail.

Even for my Black 2 run where I didn't use my starter at all and I boxed it, I still picked Oshawott instead of other Pokemon because it's now one of my top favorite Pokemons.

Ah, Oshawott. It's sad how maligned it was by fans when the starters were revealed.

I saw the first two episodes of the BW anime before I played White, so I had no idea what this little blue otter Pokémon was — all I knew was it was adorable and I wanted one. True story: I couldn't decide between Tepig and Oshawott, so I ended up using both — I played White until I got the C-Gear, then traded my Oshawott to my sister's copy of Black. Then I restarted with Tepig and traded my Oshawott back when I got the C-Gear again. Silly, but I don't regret it — my Samurott was a pretty solid member of the team, and might have taken out Ghetsis's Hydreigon on his own if the horrible dragon hadn't flattened him with Dragon Pulse. I gave him Blizzard and X-Scissor specifically to deal with dragons, so he was pretty useful against Iris.

I ended up calling my Samurott Sammy, even though he didn't have an official nickname; in fact, I recently bred a competitive Oshawott on Omega Ruby, and called him Sammy. I should really get round to EV training him, shouldn't I? :3

I like oshawott so much, I saw oshawott in pokemon anime from that time I always choose oshawott in my both B/W game. I like it because after evolution when it envolve in sumrott it is just damn awesome , I also like when it do some clumsy things in anime. It is also my star water pokemon when I take E4.

What do you think of Oshawott?
Adorable. Just adorable. When I first saw it I thought it was the cutest thing ever.

Did you choose it for your starter pokemon and why?
I sure did! I'm not such a fan of Samurott though, so I kinda wish I'd given it an Everstone :P

What do you think of the overall design of Oshawott?
So so adorable.

Do you think 'Oshawott' is a great name for this pokemon?
If you want to rename this pokemon, what would you rename this pokemon to be?
It's a fine name and I couldn't imagine it being called anything else! (perhaps that's because Oshawott is the perfect name, or perhaps it's just a lack of creativity on my part *shrug*) :P

Do you have any other thoughts? Post em' here!
Nothing else except I'd like the entire evolutionary line a bit more if its final form were a bit better competitively.

What do you think of Oshawott?
An adoreable, baby water otter, my favorite starter still :D
Did you choose it for your starter pokemon and why?
Favorite of the Unova (and all for that matter) starters, and I also normally pick water types :P
Why not?
Only times I didn't pick the little guy were to use the other 2 starters in other versions :)
What do you think of the overall design of Oshawott?
They defnitely were going for "cute baby otter", as the design may point to it being the least though starter it is pretty skilled with using it's shell. Hinting to it's samurai-themed evolutions. Couldn't get any cuter XD
Do you think 'Oshawott' is a great name for this pokemon?
Pretty fitting, no doubt :P
If you want to rename this pokemon, what would you rename this pokemon to be?
Waddlewot? xD It seems to waddle...a lot.
Do you have any other thoughts? Post em' here! Nope. Just glad this little guy exists :D Starters are more fun to pick when they are all cute, but Oshawott kinda takes the cake on the Unova starters :P

What do you think of Oshawott?

He may well be the cutest starter ever. Not only does he have an adorable face, there are numerous cute Gifs of him from the anime.

Did you choose him in the games as your starter?

Yes. In both Black and my initial run of White 2. In both games he and his evolutions were in my team all the way to the end of the game.

Why not?

One of my White 2 runs was a Grass Monotype and the rules of the Monotype stated I had to pick the Grass Starter.

What do you think of the name Oshawott?

It is a cute name for a cute starter.

Anything else?

It is adorable to play with him in Pokémon Amie.

I love Oshawott! By far my favorite fifth gen. starter. I think it is adorable, especially in the anime. I love its voice. <3 I definitely think the name "Oshawott" is good for this Pokemon. It's the only fifth gen. starter I really like, honestly. It has become one of my favorite Pokemon throughout time.

I think Oshawott is cute. I chose it as my starter Pokémon. I was going to choose one of the other two but decided on Oshawott. I'm glad I chose it.

I do love the progression of Oshawott's evolution line, and it was cool seeing Samurott turn out as it did because it was not a design people were expecting for the final stage, and I like it when unexpected stuff like that is pulled on us. I was a fan of Ash's Oshawott in the anime as well, he did kinda help me with watching BW even at its worst, and while I was disappointed he didn't evolve, it was nice to see him have tons of funny moments which is great because I'm a bit of a funny person myself.
